Two casinos owned by MGM Resorts booked their first sports bets in Mississippi on Aug. 1, 2018. Mississippi enacted a new law in 2017 that allowed for sports betting pending a favorable decision by the Supreme Court. In June 2018, the Mississippi Gaming Commission adopted implementing regulations that require all betting to take place in person, with mobile wagering to be considered later.

Be sure to check back often for updates as more states look to add sports betting. This restriction is due to theFederal Wire Act of 1961, which explicitly prohibits the processing of wagers across state lines. However, several legal commentators believe that wagers over interstate networks are fine if state law doesn’t expressly prohibit them. If true, then wagers could technically be transmitted between states where sports betting legal, opening up a whole slew of possibilities. Although this is more the exception than the rule, some states only allow mobile wagers to be transmitted from casino premises.

Over the years, regulations that come with gambling have changed in many ways. What used to be governed at the federal level, has morphed to the local governments calling the shots. If you are not familiar with the laws and regulations as they apply to gambling in your state, it would be to your advantage to do your research. Arkansas and some other states like Delaware,only allow casinos in pari-mutuel venues. Often these venues are race tracks dedicated to horse or dog betting. Thus the term “Racinos” was formed as they are a combination of Racing tracks and Casinos.

A proposed bill was introduced this April that would create an Alabama Sports Wagering Commission to oversee the regulation of sports betting in the state. Under the proposed bill, bettors would be able to gamble on pro and college sports. Most would agree that Las Vegas, Nevada, is the premier gaming destination in the US.

This back-and-forth around the legality of gambling, coupled with the fact that individual states have their own say over whether to allow it, has left a lot of people uncertain about its legality.
